Alexander Ekman (1984) was born in Stockholm, Sweden where he trained at the Royal Swedish Ballet School. He later joined the Royal Swedish Ballet. From August 2002 until mid 2005 he was a remarkable dancer with Nederlands Dans Theater II. Last season 2005-2006 he danced with Cullberg Ballet in Sweden.
Ekman created his first choreographies in Stockholm and later for the Nederlands Dans Theater Choreography Workshop 2004 and 2005. His pieces are characterized by innovative ideas and humorous solutions. During his time with Cullberg Ballet, he
also made two creations for the company. He won the second prize and the Critic’s Award at the International Choreography Competition 2006 in Hannover with his
piece Swingle Sisters. The BalletTanz Yearbook 2006 mentioned Ekman as a ‘young choreographer to watch’.
In November 2006 Ekman made his debut as a choreographer with Flockwork for his ex-colleagues in Nederlands Dans Theater II. Exactly one year later, November 2007 Alexander Ekman made LAB 15 for Nederlands Dans Theater.
